Should we go with one of the Belgian waffle makers that have become so ubiquitous of late or stick with the shallower 'Merican kind we'd had for so many years? What kinds of bells and whistles (seriously, waffle makers make loads of crazy sounds nowadays!) did we want? What brands were best? A few friends loved their Warings but could we (hopefully) be happy with something less expensive?
And, most importantly, was there any way to find a waffle iron without non-stick coating?
I recycled all our non-stick pans years ago since I am skeptical about the safety of plastics in any food prep that involves either heat or long-term storage. And the non-stick coating on our dearly departed waffle iron had given up the ghost years before it fell prey to the enthusiastic grappling of our 16-month-old son. The teflon coating was badly scratched and chipped as the result of our habit of buttering the plates with a metal knife before pouring the batter in.
But I discovered that no one makes non-non-stick waffle irons anymore unless you want to get a cast iron one that you heat on the stove like a griddle and I knew I'd never use that. You can buy a used electric one on ebay from the 1940s -- back before Sunbeam and GE and the like had embraced the evil concept of planned obsolescence -- they still work!!!

In the end, I chose this extremely simple, Cuisinart waffle iron for $30. It's a lot like the one we had before, including the non-stick coating I'd hoped to avoid :(
In a moment of inspiration during our maiden voyage with the new iron, I grabbed the silicone basting brush out of the drawer, dipped it in the butter (we leave ours out so it was pretty soft) and gave the plates a quick once-over. Thanks to its many bristles, it covered every nook and cranny with fat in a moment and I didn't even have to dip back into the butter dish before greasing the other plate.
Not only will it not harm the non-stick coating, it's also the perfect tool for this task -- so much more effective than a knife, fork or paper towel could possibly be. And I just threw it in the dishwasher when I was through. Just the kind of clean up I like :)
I used a fraction of the butter I'd have used with any other implement and although I'm not exactly happy about the teflon coating, at least I've figured out how to keep it where it belongs.

All in all if you do do that it won't be non-stick any more. So here I am researching articles about WAFFLE IRONS FOR PETES SAKE because this is what my life has become and I come across your article that says it's ok to put butter on them?! They are also making me buy a new one. So if buttering does work then maybe I won't have to please respond.
Your parents are wrong they are ment to be sprayed there is no bad reaction from spraying the spray in the can like (Pam) and the like.... it seems there just being cheap and don't want you wasting there spray. I use the spray all the time.

ReplyDeletefirst of all, good luck. Second of all, I'm not an expert but I do not see why you could not use any kind of spray or butter on a nonstick waffle iron. The only thing you can't do to one is touch it with metal as that destroys the non-stick coating which is why I like to use the silicon brush to do it - seems to work just fine and has had no ill effects on our waffle iron. I like the brush idea, do you Olive oil would be better than butter. I wonder how butter does at high temperatures.
ReplyDeleteI do it exactly like this article and use the inexpensive waffle maker. I have for the last 4 years and initially tried the spray with no luck. The secret is butter on both the top and bottom. I use a silicon brush and throw it in the dishwasher just like the article. I only wanted to add that the magic number is 4 minute time or watch for the steam to basically stop. And only use a plastic knife to help the waffle release. Use a shop paper towel to clean up but no need to use soap or other cleansers. Happy waffleling.
ReplyDeleteHave you considered buying a ceramic waffle maker? Non-stick ceramic waffle makers are available with no teflon and are PTFE and PFOA free.
ReplyDeleteI just bought a Cuisinart Belgian Waffle Maker from Costco. It definitely has nonstick plates and the instructions clearly say to "season with cooking spray or brush with a flavorless oil." Again these are non-stick plates.

I have a GE Waffle maker and flat sandwich press that is about 50 years old. It is like new condition because I keep it clean and polished after use. Now this unit is made to last. Unfortunately newer units are throw away and to me it is false economy to be having to buy a new waffle maker every 3-4 years. But that's just my opinion. The one I have does not have Teflon coated plates. It was made many years before Teflon appeared on the market. It has bare aluminum plates. I used canola oil with a brush to oil it up and that works great. Obviously the plates are washed by hand and NEVER in a dishwasher because that ruins them. Still working all these 70 years and made when American workers and comnpanies had pride in what they manufactured.
ReplyDeleteI agree one hundred percent. It's truly shameful that companies build things to break nowadays. And awful for the planet and all of us, too. Glad you've got one of the good, old ones and that you take such good care of it. May it last another 50 years (or more).

ReplyDeleteMoving past your grammatical issues, sprays such as Pam contain silicone and while they do work to prevent the waffle from sticking, over time these silicone sprays will leave a sticky residue on the grids that is a nightmare to remove.
Brushing with a flavorless oil such as vegetable, canola or melted shortening is best. Also, there are now light tasting olive oil sprays without silicone that will also work well.
Dear Anonymous Grammar Police. Not everyone is as educated as you even if they may have more experience with the actual waffle iron. And maybe he/she is not a native English speaker. I make plenty of mistakes in my second, adopted language.
ReplyDeleteIt is not correct that you can't get a new bare metal waffle maker. Palmer manufacturing makes them in Pennsylvania. I just got one after owning lots of non-stick models. I ordered it from this web page:

ReplyDeleteI wanted to get one like my parents had, the thing lasted for 40 years. I had one but my brother thought it was my parents and took it. Took keep peace in the family and my face in one piece I just kept quiet. Now years later I can't find that company any longer :(
